Hi all
There was an error in my column this week.
http://www.badscience.net/2011/04/id-expect-this-from-ukip-or-the-daily-mail-not-from-a-government-leaflet/ I said the government had got rid of the British Social Attitudes survey, in fact they've cancelled the funding for the health bit, but the survey is independent and will continue. I was being dumb, I knew this, and the
article I linked to in the piece said this! I think I mangled it while chopping down from 900 to 600 words. Humblest apologies to NatCen!
http://www.natcen.ac.uk/media-centre/press-releases/2011-press-releases/british-social-attitudes-alive-and-well I've updated the online version at
www.badscience.net, leaving a note of the original error; I've posted this here; I've tweeted it; and I hope the Guardian will run a correction both in print and for the online version.
For all the people who I've ever caught out getting stuff wrong, who doggedly defended it in the face of all reason, I'd like to share a very small piece of personal experience, in honest good faith: making a mistake occasionally, and correcting it openly, really does feel completely fine.
Incidentally, if you're a ".
ac.uk" academic I strongly recommend registering at NatCen, the treasure chest of data you will find there may defy all your expectations.
